The goal of the Accelerated Reader (AR) Program is to help students become lifelong learners who love to read. AR is used to help motivate students reading practices. Students at Port Washington Elementary are given a test at the beginning of the year to determine the most effective range for him/her to practice reading. This Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD) range is a reading range of books that will challenge a student without causing frustration or loss of motivation. It is the level of difficulty from which a student should be able to read independently for long periods of time. During the reading time, both fluency and endurance are improved. Our students enjoy taking tests, accumulating points and earning rewards. We are excited with the reading progress our students are making.
