School Schedule: Vaccinations & 2-Hr Delays

February 16, 2021

Indian Valley Families:

After a mild January, February is delivering the winter punch than many of us were hoping to avoid.  Nonetheless, the assurance of spring provides hope with the turn of each calendar day.

As much as the weather, covid vaccines have been headline news.  Employees in the education industry are in Phase 1B of the public distribution plan.  Indian Valley has coordinated with the Tuscarawas County Health Department to plan vaccine distribution to Indian Valley staff members who choose to participate.

I want to share how the timing of these plans will affect the school schedule and give you advance notice for your own planning purposes.

Wed, March 3

  • Round 1 of the vaccine for participating staff members in the afternoon

  • 1:00 Early Dismissal for students

Thur, March 4 and Fri, March 5

  • We need to anticipate possible side effects for staff members

  • Full Remote learning days

    • Students will follow daily Zoom schedules as we did back around Thanksgiving

Wed, March 31

  • Round 2 of the vaccine for participating staff members in the afternoon

  • 1:00 Early Dismissal for students

There is no need to adjust the schedule for April 1-2.  April 1 is already a scheduled Professional Development Day for staff, in which students do not have school.  April 2 is Good Friday and school is not in session.

Additionally, I want to share that we are nearing the state minimum number of hours for school attendance.  If we have to close for a day, the plans we have in place allow for those hours to count.  At this point, hours for any full calamity days will count toward our required school hours in one of three ways:

  1. Blizzard Bag Days (used for Calamity Days 6-7-8)

  2. Calamity Make-up Days already calendared if needed (used for Calamity Days 9-10-11)

  3. Full Remote Days (will announce more about this if we get to Calamity Days 12 and up)

However, a 2-hour delay does not count and is a straightforward deduction from our school hours.  Therefore, if we have a morning where it seems that a 2-hour delay is most appropriate, I may go ahead and close to avoid subtracting 2-hours from our total.

I look forward to the 2021-2022 school year for returning to a more stable and predictable schedule.  Thank you for your patience, support, and understanding during this covid conundrum of a year.

Most Sincerely,

Dr. Ira Wentworth

Superintendent
